Projected within the installation is a film and sound work exploring loss and the continuation of life through marginal but equally almost mythical figures of World War II. The sound begins with an imagined telephone conversation is constructed between myself and my dead mother using the voice of Julie Andrews (as Maria Von Trapp - an archetype substitute mother as depicted in the film ‘The Sound of Music’ who flees from the Nazi occupation of Austria). The soundtrack continues with the sound of a Wellington Bomber, famously designed for the RAF by Barnes Neville Wallis then the voice of Michael Redgrave as Barnes Wallis in the film ‘The Dambusters’. It concludes with a conversation by the artist’s children on the formation of stars and the voice of Barbara Hepworth, an artist who depicted the work of surgeons in London in the aftermath of WWII.
The footage in the film moves from the cosy intimacy of the home hearth to the monumental structure of a 10m commemorative beacon.
