Films
Some films are a single specific poem, written by others, by myself, or in collaboration with another writer. While other films are more loosely poetic, using texts found, adapted or extracted from a variety of sources. As a genre, Marie Craven describes poetry film (also known as videopoetry) better than I could:
"Videopoetry is a genre of film-making with origins reaching far back into cinema history, especially within the areas of the experimental and avant garde. Beyond this, it is a modern manifestation of poetry itself, which began in ancient time as an oral form, and has been adapting and evolving with new technologies ever since." - Marie Craven - filmmaker and curator
Many of my films use 'flicker film' technique. This is documented in my essays in PoetryFilm Kanal magazine and in Sarah Tremlett's book The Poetics of Poetry Film (Intellect Books 2021)
Comments on my work:
"The fast-paced, ever-evolving layering of imagery make this film a delight to watch and it remains engaging throughout." – Trisha McCrae and Charlotte Ginsborg
"Just pure creativity – and totally unique – I haven’t seen anything like it before." - Sarah Tremlett
"Brilliantly edited ... and with a truly evocative soundscape ... expressed so much in such a relatively short film" - Dr Niall Munro, Oxford Brookes Poetry Centre
